Rossini writes: “Petite Messe Solennelle, for four voices accompanied by two pianos and a harmonium. There were twelve apostles at the Last Supper, as depicted in Leonardo’s fresco. And – who would think! – there were also those ones among Your disciples who sang out of tune. Lord, trust me, there will be no Judas at my supper, and my people will sing – with purity and love – Your praises and this humble composition, which is the last of my mortal old age sins.” The celebrated opera composer of the time Meyerbeer was present at the first performance of this piece. In his enthusiasm, Meyerbeer sprang up from his seat, rushed over to master Rossini with burning eyes and an agitated expression on his face, and began to zealously embrace Rossini. Finally, Rossini had to resort to warning him that such intense excitement could be harmful to his health.
