László Csáki: Blue Pelican (Kék Pelikan, 2024) 110 years of Hungarian animation

Are you able to imagine what it was like when Hungarians were not permitted to travel? For younger viewers, it is perhaps inconceivable. But what about when you could travel, yet you couldn’t afford to do so?  more

Current events

Well, that sounds more familiar! Observing the aesthetics gradually seeping back in, you might have the impression that the 1990s were not an era, but rather a state of mind. Yet films like the Blue Pelican remind us that there are plenty of themes to work with in relation to the tremendous upheaval that occurred after the fall of Communism. This film, which boldly mixes animation with documentary elements, was made over a period of ten years, and the events of the past are retold by former crooks. Of course, after the film, everyone can decide for themselves whether ‘crook’ is quite the right word after all.

In Hungarian, without subtitles

The discussions before and after the screening will be conducted in Hungarian.

host Anna Ida Orosz
